    Fox Lane High School Chapter

    Beginning with four charter members inducted in 1934, the Fox Lane High School (FLHS) National Honor Society (NHS) has a long and unbroken history.

    The FLHS Chapter of the NHS recognizes students for exemplary scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Membership is a privilege.

    Membership in the Fox Lane Chapter of the NHS is an honor and carries with it responsibilities to the school, the student body, and to the community as a whole.  With high expectations for FLHS NHS members, they are expected to be the best they can be. We encourage our students to look for ways to provide unexpected service, to lead and make a difference, to demonstrate positive character traits, and to maintain the highest level of scholarship.

    The Basics

    Eligible candidates will meet the following criteria:

    • Earn a cumulative GPA of 90.00% or higher by the end of the first semester of junior year.   This GPA includes weighted courses and no rounding up of the GPA. 

    • Demonstrate consistent leadership and good character.

    • Provide ongoing service to our school and community.

    Effective June 2024, all juniors will receive an application to apply for the National Honor Society at the end of their junior year.  Juniors that meet the aforementioned criteria are welcomed to apply for NHS, by completing  and submitting an application for review by the FLHS NHS Faculty Council by August 1st of that same year. Once the review of the potential candidates is complete, candidates will be notified in September of the new school year.  The length of time for this review may vary; however, the typical time for review is approximately four weeks from the application deadline. At the end of September, the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony will take place at FLHS. 

    Membership Expectations

    Members of the National Honor Society are expected to exceed the expectations defined by the first induction class of 1934:

    “We will strive for the ideals of the school, both alone and with many.  We will never bring disgrace to ourselves or our school by any act of dishonesty.  We have obeyed and reverenced the laws of the school, and this we will continue to do, endeavoring to instill a like respect and reverence in those about us.  We will try to do our whole duty as students with the hope that the school may be enriched by our efforts.”

    Expectation Details

    The purpose of the NHS at FLHS shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote and respect leadership, and to develop character.  Members are expected to maintain these standards of conduct and to be role models at all times whether in school or in the community at large.


    Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students of good character:

    • Take criticism willingly and accept recommendations graciously.
    • Consistently exemplify desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability).
    • Uphold the principles of morality and ethics.
    • Cooperate by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, athletics, office, library, hall, and other school venues.
    • Demonstrate the highest standards of honesty and reliability.
    • Show courtesy, concern, and respect for all others.
    • Observe instruction and rules, both inside and outside the classroom.
    • Have the power of concentration and sustained attention as shown by perseverance and application to studies.
    • Manifest truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing an unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.
    • Actively help rid the school of bad influences.
    • Are free from any truancy reports, in-school suspensions, and out-of-school suspensions

    Peer Tutoring

    For many years at FLHS, the hallmark of NHS community service has been peer tutoring. Members are expected to continue this worthy tradition of helping fellow students improve academically. Members will be alerted to peer tutoring opportunities via email. It is important that members ensure that the school maintains an active email address for each member. Members are encouraged to pursue tutoring opportunities independently by talking with your teachers and fellow students. Guidelines are listed below.

    Requirements and parameters of the tutoring program (subject to some change to reflect various needs):

    • Minimum of 5 hours of tutoring (this may change if the need for peer tutoring increases).
    • Members may not count hours for the tutoring of siblings. 
    • Tutoring can only be done on school property (elementary, middle and high school).
    • A faculty member must supervise each tutoring session and sign a login sheet. After school extra help is an ideal time and location for tutoring because the teacher can guide your tutoring session. The library and Academic Support Center are two other tutoring locations. Please check in with a staff member before tutoring to let them know that you will be asking them to confirm your tutoring session by signing your log sheet.
    • Submit your log sheets to an NHS advisor.
    • The deadline for submission of tutoring log sheets is on or before May 31 of each year.

    Community Service

    In addition to the peer tutoring requirement, members are expected to volunteer in at least three school-sponsored service events. Some examples are listed below.  There will be many opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the school community. Please confirm with one of the advisors prior to your service that your contribution meets this intended expectation, i.e. gain approval before the community service activity.

    • Wellness Day Tag Sale
    • Science Symposium
    • Senior Citizen Prom
    • Middle School Science Fair
    • Multicultural Week

    Members are expected to maintain an average overall GPA of 90.00 or better throughout their senior year.


    The student who exercises leadership:

    • Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.
    • Demonstrates leadership in school activities.
    • Exercises influence on peers in upholding school activities.
    • Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school.
    • Is able to delegate responsibilities.
    • Exemplifies a positive attitude.
    • Inspires positive behavior in others.
    • Demonstrates academic initiative.
    • Successfully holds school offices or other positions of responsibility.
    • Conducts business effectively, and without prodding, demonstrates reliability and dependability.
    • Demonstrates leadership in the classroom, at work, and in school or community activities.
    • Is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted.
