Medicaid School-Based Services

The Bedford Central School District is beginning to participate in a Medicaid School-Based Services program. This program allows school districts to seek Medicaid reimbursement for certain special education and related services that are already being provided to eligible students as part of their Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this mean for my child?

If your child is already receiving services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, or nursing services through their IEP, those services will continue exactly as they are now. Nothing about your child’s services, placement, providers, or frequency will change as a result of this program.

Why is my consent needed?

Federal law requires parent/guardian consent before a school district can bill Medicaid for these services. By signing the consent form, you are allowing the district to submit claims to Medicaid for reimbursement of services your child already receives.

Do I have to give consent?

Participation is completely voluntary. Choosing not to give consent will not affect your child’s services, IEP, or relationship with the school in any way.

Does this cost my family anything?

No. There is no cost to you, no co-pays, and no out-of-pocket expenses.

Will this affect my child’s Medicaid benefits?

No. School-based Medicaid billing:

  • Does not reduce your child’s Medicaid benefits or annual limits
  • Does not impact eligibility for other Medicaid or community-based services
  • Does not change your private insurance in any way

Why is the district doing this?

Medicaid reimbursement helps the district recover a portion of the cost of providing special education services. These funds are reinvested into programs and services that support students with disabilities. We encourage you to complete this form and return it at your earliest convenience.

If you have questions or would like help understanding the consent form, please do not hesitate to contact the Special Education Office. We are happy to talk this through with you.
