Bedford Central School District Celebrates the Start of a New School Year

Pencils were sharpened, fresh notebooks were ready to be cracked open, and students wore huge smiles as they greeted friends on the first day of school across Bedford Central School District. After a summer away, some of our students made big transitions while others returned to familiar spaces.
At Fox Lane High School, freshly minted seniors welcomed freshmen to their new school before they settled into the Mary Lou Meese theater for orientation. There, they were introduced to school leadership before heading off with seniors for tours of the school. Freshmen also took part in a scavenger hunt, explored extracurricular activities and considered how they could make their mark on the school community, got locks for their new lockers and more.
Across the campus at the middle school, sixth graders had a similar morning full of learning all about their new school. They met new friends, learned how to read their schedules, practiced locking and unlocking their lockers and participated in a very energetic pep rally where they were introduced to middle school staff.

At our elementary schools, older siblings could be seen showing the way to new students and there were lots of smiles and great big hugs when greeting familiar faces. There were reminders about routines, organizing desks, and lots of icebreakers.
Second graders at Bedford Village Elementary School called out a chorus of “Do you have a birthday in October?” (among other things) as students carried around clipboards while trying to learn more about their new classmates. In Bedford Hills Elementary School, some fifth graders looked closely at a classmate before each turned around, changed something about themself, and then tried to guess what their partner had changed.
Districtwide energy was high, smiles were plentiful, and staff were ready to welcome students with open arms. It’s going to be a great school year!
