Fox Friday is a series that highlights the accomplishments of students districtwide. We regularly feature the incredible things our students are up to — whether they are excelling academically, athletically or are quietly impressive.

This week, we’re shining a light on Class of 2025 Valedictorian Gabriel Wierzchowski and Salutatorian Ava Shuster — two students who have excelled academically in their years in the Bedford Central School District and who are active members of the Fox Lane community.

What is your anticipated major and where do you plan to be next year?

I plan to study Quantitative Economics, but I am still deciding between the University of Notre Dame and Dartmouth College.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Writing my journal article on the economics of healthcare. I’m glad to say that with the help of my mentor, Dr. Caroline Sloan, I was able to conduct and document research that I felt was impactful in a field that I cared about. The research process is fun and fulfilling, especially when you’re pursuing what you love.

What do you think helped you get to this level of academic success?

My two older sisters, Corinne and Jocelyn, because I’ve always been inspired by them and hoped to follow in their footsteps. They’ve helped me navigate through high school and have always had my back, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their help.

Are you involved in any clubs, sports, or community groups?

I am a member of our Fox Lane Boys Volleyball team and a club team in Connecticut as well. Outside of school and volleyball, I’m a part of Science Olympiad, Student Union, and I host annual collection drives on Election Day as part of my "We Elect to Collect" campaign.

Do you have a favorite class and/or teacher?

I’ve loved taking my Environmental Science class this year; it’s exciting to be able to take scientific principles and explore them through real-world applications and examples. Whether we’re learning about environmental ethics, energy consumption, or aquatic ecosystems, there’s always something new to look forward to. Additionally, I recently had the opportunity to visit the United Nations through AP Environmental Science, which was an experience I never thought I’d have.

What is your favorite Fox Lane memory?

My favorite memory from my time at Fox Lane was our volleyball team’s senior night. I didn’t expect to be able to play volleyball in high school — there was no boys’ volleyball team in my freshman year — so it was surreal to be looking back on the memories I’d made in the three years I spent with my teammates.

What are you looking forward to after high school?

I’m looking forward to the unexpected! After high school, I want to have experiences and find passions that I’ve never dreamed of before. I’m excited to explore all that the world around me has to offer. I hope to learn new things both inside and outside of the classroom as I navigate college life.

Do you have any advice for other students?

Take time to slow down and live in the moment. It’s crazy to think that our class is graduating in a couple of months, and I’ve spent a lot of time reminiscing about the last four years of high school. Every day is a chance to make a memory you’ll never forget, make a new connection, or discover something about yourself — appreciate that.

What is your anticipated major and where do you plan to be next year?

School: Dartmouth College

Major: Environmental Studies/Biology

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

My sophomore/junior year science research project. With the help of my mentor, Mrs. Pirro, and my mom (driving!), I spent countless hours conducting field work at local lakes around Westchester County. I then created my own methodology to analyze the water samples and eventually wrote my own research paper — something I felt truly proud of upon completion.

What do you think helped you get to this level of academic success?

I owe my curiosity and drive to my parents. My dad sparked my love for science, helping me brainstorm BVES projects and fueling my excitement for experiments. My mom, my biggest supporter, constantly pushes me to do my best, offering guidance, encouragement, and unwavering belief in me. Their support has shaped the person I am today.

Are you involved in any clubs, sports, or community groups?

This fall marked my final season playing soccer for Fox Lane, where I had the honor of serving as captain. I also play on the basketball team. As a cellist, I perform in Fox Lane’s Cello Choir and Sinfonia groups. Additionally, I serve as treasurer of the Class of 2025 Officers, helping plan and fundraise for class events.

Do you have a favorite class and/or teacher?

I’ve taken many amazing classes at Fox Lane, but one stands out — AP Bio with Mrs. Luna during my junior year. Not only did it spark my interest in biology, but it also deepened my love for science by revealing its connections to environmental science and chemistry. It was always the highlight of my day.

What is your favorite Fox Lane memory?

Performing with Cello Choir and Sinfonia in Orlando, Florida last year was an unforgettable experience. From festival competitions to roller coaster rides at Universal — and even the hours spent bonding during flight delays — it was so fun to connect with musicians across all the music programs in such a unique setting.

What are you looking forward to after high school?

I’m excited for the adventure that comes with college — diving into new classes, uncovering unexpected interests, meeting new people, and embracing every opportunity that comes my way. I also can’t wait to study abroad! One of my biggest goals is to travel and experience as much of the world as possible, whether that means hiking through rainforests, exploring bustling cities, or researching ecosystems firsthand.

Do you have any advice for other students?

Instead of focusing solely on the finish line, embrace the journey! Some of the best moments come from stepping outside your comfort zone — whether it’s making new connections, asking bold questions, or taking risks. Stay curious, keep an open mind, and remember that it’s the experiences and people along the way that truly shape you.
