After missing a week of school earlier this winter, Luca Borgia’s face told the story.

“The morning he went back to school, he was all smiles,” said his father, Dan Borgia. “He gets really excited to go to school. That’s his home away from home.”

Many staff members at Pines Bridge School and principal Meg Buckland returned that affection, joining Borgia and his family when the 10-year-old Bedford resident was honored as a PNW BOCES Student of Distinction. He was recognized by the Bedford Central School District Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Glass during a meeting on February 26, 2025, at Fox Lane Middle School.

“We are all very proud of his progress and cannot wait to see what is in store next for Luca,” a beaming Buckland said.

Luca, who is now in his second year at Pines Bridge, has a habit of evoking adoration from others. Dr. Gregory Brown, PNW BOCES’ Assistant Superintendent, introduced him during the meeting by touting the record amount of support the honoree received.

“I’m not surprised to see this support,” Dan Borgia said. “Luca brings out the best in people, not only in everyone in our house but in every community he’s ever been a part of.”

Buckland said Luca’s presence at Pines Bridge has brought contagious joy to the school.

“Luca is very social and loves to cruise around the classroom in his pacer with the headlights on in the afternoon,” she said. “He enjoys participating in class and is very determined to do what he sets out to do. Luca loves joining in when staff and fellow students sing and dance. He has an infectious laugh that truly brightens our days.”
