“Slow and steady wins the race,” Pound Ridge Elementary School student Ethan said with a smile to the senior citizen holding his hand. He was escorting her to the Senior Luncheon in the school’s music room. Ethan, along with fellow fifth graders Aria, Reagan, Keira, Logan and Francesca, met seniors in front of the school and led them to the beloved annual celebration.

"The young lady who escorted me initiated a conversation, and I thought that was so mature," one of the seniors noted to a friend.

Each year, the school partners with the PRES PTA and Pound Ridge Recreation to celebrate our community’s seniors during an extra special luncheon.

“This is my very favorite event of the year,” PRES principal Dr. Stephanie Bell told the crowd. “I love to have you all here. I am so excited. Every student in our school had a hand in making today special for you.”

Kindergarteners created colorful placemats for each table setting, first graders put their green handprints on a backdrop for the photo booth, second and fourth graders performed musical numbers, and third graders created frames for the photos, which were given to the seniors as a gift.

The event, which was organized by Elementary Coordinator Erika Volpe, included a full lunch and dessert made by parent volunteers — who also served as waitresses for guests who weren’t able to move around easily on their own.

The seniors were delighted.

“The food here is always so good!” one woman said.

“Oh, that was very nice,” a man said after students sang to the group.

Before leaving, the treasured guests were able to pack up some leftovers to bring home in takeout containers.

We can’t wait to have them back again next year!
