SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS:
As you know, ALL students had a summer reading assignment that can be found here .
Many AP courses and upper-level courses also have summer assignments that can be found here .
WORKING PAPERS:
If a student needs working papers they should follow this process:
(1) Print the Working Papers Application online: here
(2) If prior to school starting a student should then contact the High School Guidance Receptionist, Samira Barghout sbarghout4240@bcsdny.org or at 914-241-6082 to check for a time when the application can be processed - or - once school starts they should bring the completed application to the Guidance Department for Ms. Barghout to process.
COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Summer is a great time for students to fulfill community service hours! Students are required to complete 20 hours of community service for graduation. Students can log their service hours here: Community Service Form .
AP SCORES:
AP scores were released in early July. Students should log into “My AP” through their College Board account in order to access scores. For more information please visit the College Board’s website at: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/view-scores#/
SCHEDULE INFORMATION
Student schedules will be available on Monday, August 21st on the Synergy portal. The FLHS Guidance Department does not have access to creating or resetting passwords for portals for families. For assistance you must follow the instructions provided by the technology department.
*IMPORTANT* Dropping or Adding a Course:
If after reviewing your courses, a change is requested (not a level increase), students should use this form to communicate that request with their counselor. Please use your BCSD email account to complete the form. The deadline to request a course ch ange is Monday, August 28th.

Counselors cannot honor requests to be in a different section of a course or to have a different teacher.

Students should only request a different class, or request a class that is wrong/missing from their schedule.
-
Please note that requests to get into a class that is at capacity/closed cannot be honored. Also, please be aware that some changes may impact other courses. Once your schedule is changed it cannot be undone.

Due to the complexities of the block schedule, counselors are unable to accommodate changes to a different lunch period.
Please do not email your counselor in addition to submitting the Google form. The counselors are going through numerous requests and will get back to you as quickly as possible. It may take more than a day to process and respond. Please do not submit the Google form multiple times for the same request unless you have not heard back in several business days. Your counselor will respond to your request (via your student email) letting you know if the change is possible and/or when the change has been made. We sincerely appreciate your patience.
Override a Department Recommendation:

Override forms (to gain access to a higher level course then what a student was recommended for) were due in late June. At this time it is too late to request access to a higher level course.
Courses Canceled Due to Low Enrollment:
-
A course might be missing from your schedule (with or without another course in its place). Please know that there are a handful of classes that will not be offered this year due to low enrollment. In some cases, an alternative course was substituted for the original request. Here is a list of courses that will not be offered in the 2023-2024 school year:

Master Schedule Development:

Keep in mind that the master schedule is a complicated and constantly evolving process. A course might have been canceled and in some cases a course might not work in your schedule. Every attempt is made over the summer to get students as many of their original course requests as possible.

Developing a master schedule for a high school building is complex and we additionally appreciate your understanding and acceptance of your schedule as is, where possible. Of course, if there is a major issue with your schedule (ie. you are missing a required course) we will want to rectify the problem immediately.
Add/Drop Deadlines:
As the year progresses please keep in mind these important deadlines:

September 15 - Add deadline: last day to add a class/last year to request a schedule change

October 10 - Drop deadline: last day to drop a class (full year and 1st semester courses)

November 13 - Course Level Change deadline: last day to change a course level (from a higher level course to a lower level course)

January 22 - Start of 2nd Semester classes

February 1 - Add deadline: last day to add a second semester course

February 9 - Drop deadline: last day to drop a second semester course
TIMELINES
We recommend that you review the timeline that corresponds to your child’s grade level to stay up to date on the year’s events. Occasionally, dates may need to change and we will email families if this occurs.
RISING SENIORS
CLASS OF 2024
Junior Summer Checklist:
We hope rising seniors are making progress on the Junior Summer Checklist .
Common Application:
Reminder that the Common Application rolled over on August 1st. You can now complete any portion of the Common Application that you would like before school starts. Make sure you use our Cheat Sheet to help you navigate the different sections of the Common App.
Senior Group Guidance:
Senior Group Guidance tentatively will begin on September 15th.
College Meetings:
We understand that many seniors would like to meet with their counselor to discuss college applications at this time. We ask that individual and family college meetings begin the 3rd week of September. At that time, seniors and parents can make meetings as needed with their counselor.
Senior Parent Night:
Senior Parent Night is scheduled for September 28th. Mark your calendars!
Unofficial Transcripts:
Unofficial transcripts will be posted on the portal in early September.
Standardized Testing:
For students who still need to take a fall SAT/ACT please note the following information:

The deadline for the October 7th SAT is September 8th.
-
The deadline for the September 9th ACT was August 4th/late deadline August 18th.

Testing sites and spaces are limited in our geographic area. Many colleges have chosen to remain test-optional for the 2023-2024 year. Please refer to college websites for the most up-to-date information.
PSATS / TEST PREP
(RISING JUNIORS & SOPHOMORES)
All juniors are automatically registered to take the PSAT on October 11, 2023. Students can create or use their Khan Academy account to complete free online test-prep for the PSAT. Khan Academy is the one test prep organization that is affiliated with the College Board. Additionally, students who want to take a free practice test can download the Bluebook App . (Students who already know that they prefer the ACT can also find free prep on the ACT website: ACT Test Prep ). Students who intend to opt out of the PSAT should notify their counselor in early October.
The PSAT will be available to sophomores who wish to take it. Taking the PSATs is optional and it is only recommended for students who are accelerated in Math.
*NEW* Digital PSAT Format:
New this year the PSAT will now be completed online! The new test is shorter, has more time per question, and has a built-in calculator. Please watch this short video (3min) for more information. More information will be sent early this fall from the high school administration.
Testing Accommodations for the PSATs:
If your child receives testing accommodations in school, please check with your counselor to ensure that you applied for testing accommodations for all College Board exams. Getting accommodations in school does NOT guarantee that a student will be approved by the College Board for testing accommodations. Students need to apply early, as the College Board states that it can take up to 8 weeks to be approved for accommodations. Students only need to apply once during high school in order to be approved for testing accommodations.
RISING FRESHMAN
CLASS OF 2027Welcome to FLHS! On your child’s schedule, you will be able to see their counselor assignment.
Information about any Orientation activities will be sent out by the FLHS Administration this summer.
TECHNOLOGY
CONCERNSStudents who are having issues with their Chromebook, WiFi, portal, or any other technology issue should use the Student Help Desk . Counselors cannot assist with technology issues.

SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS COLLEGE DECISIONS:The National Enrollment Deposit Deadline is May 1st - College-bound seniors need to deposit at ONE college by May 1st. For seniors who have not yet made a choice yet: most schools will have both in person and virtual events for accepted students. Seniors should take part in those events to help make the decision that is best for them. Seniors who intend to defer their acceptance and/or would like to consider a gap or PG year should let their counselor know so we can work together on a plan. Schools will have a process for requesting a deferral which would need to take place prior to May 1.
We will celebrate college decision day on Monday, May 1st with a special senior lunch provided by senior parents. Seniors can celebrate their college choice by wearing college gear to school on May 1st. We will be celebrating all choices on May 1st regardless of a student’s chosen path. Mrs. Pirro will be emailing seniors more information about that day soon. Go Seniors!
Once students have heard back from all of their colleges and have finalized their plans for next year, they should update Naviance with their college results. They should log into Naviance and either follow the directions to complete the “Graduation Survey” (that was emailed to all seniors on 4/10/23), or they can click on the "edit" pencil to let us know what decisions they received, and to set their college choice for next year. By setting an attending school in Naviance we will send a final transcript to that college (prior to July 1st). No additional request needs to be made by a student for a final transcript .
FOURTH QUARTER REMINDERS:
Senior grades continue to matter! Just a reminder that all college acceptances are conditional on comparable grades from the time of a student’s application. Seniors: Please don't put yourself in a situation where you get a "what happened???" letter from your intended college.
FINANCIAL AID:Financial Aid packages should have also been sent to seniors at this time. Students should log into the college’s portal for an award letter, or to check to see if additional information is required. Please contact a financial aid office directly if you have any questions or concerns or would like to request a “professional review” to reconsider a financial aid package. Here is an online resource to help you understand more about financial aid packages: College Costs . Additionally, the SUNY system and HESC are hosting a series of online virtual events in April and May - SUNY Financial Aid events and HESC Financial Aid events .
COMMUNITY SERVICE:Seniors are required to complete 20 hours of community service for graduation. Students can log their service hours here: COMMUNITY SERVICE FORM . ASPIRE students must submit their hours prior to leaving on their senior internship.
JUNIOR PARENT REMINDERS
STANDARDIZED TESTING:
Junior Group Guidance sessions just wrapped up after 11 sessions! In our last session, we shared a Junior Spring Checklist with items for juniors to focus on over the next few months. At this time juniors should have completed their individual college meeting with their counselor. If they have not, or if a student would like an additional meeting(s), they should reach out to their counselor at any time to schedule an appointment. Families can also contact their counselor for a family college meeting.
TEST OPTIONAL POLICIES:
We have already begun receiving word from many colleges that standardized testing will be optional again next year. With that said, you shouldn't assume that standardized testing will be optional at all schools next year. Check individual college websites for the most up to date information. Please make sure you register for the SAT or ACT if you haven't done so already.
PARENT BRAG SHEET:In early March, parents of Juniors received an email titled, “Parent Brag Sheet.” We ask that you please respond to these Brag Sheet questions by June 1st, as your child’s counselor will use the information you provide to inform their comprehensive letter of recommendation for your child. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s counselor.
STUDENT QUESTIONNAIRE:
We also emailed all juniors in early March a student questionnaire to complete. If your child has not already completed the Student Questionnaire, they must do so by May 1st.
VIRTUAL COLLEGE EVENTS:
College Fairs are a great way to learn more about a college and to demonstrate interest. Please see our handout on demonstrating interest to learn other ways to show a college that you are interested.

Families interested in learning more about financial aid should register for a free Financial Aid event through SUNY or HESC. The virtual events are currently being offered throughout April and May: SUNY Financial Aid events and HESC Financial Aid events . We highly recommend that any parent interested in applying for financial aid in the fall attend one of these virtual events. Additionally, here are some financial aid basics that were discussed with juniors during Group Guidance
COLLEGE N’ COFFEE:
Please join us for an informal virtual conversation from 8:00am-9:00am on April 20th where counselors will answer any questions junior parents/guardians might have about the college process. A meeting link will be emailed out prior to the event.
SOPHOMORE PARENT REMINDERS
GROUP GUIDANCE:
Sophomore Group Guidance will run during the months of April and May. Students will meet with their counselor in small group sessions. The focus of these meetings will be career exploration and we will use a variety of inventories to help students explore their interests and abilities as they research career options. We will also discuss extracurricular activities and create a draft resume for students that they will continue to build throughout their junior and senior years.

Believe it or not your children will be taking the PSATs in just under 6 months. The company who runs the PSATs (the College Board) has changed the format for the exam. Starting this fall the PSATs will now be computer-based. More information about the new format for the PSATs will be sent this fall. Stay tuned for more information.
FRESHMAN PARENT REMINDERS
It is difficult to imagine we are nearing the end of your child’s 9th grade year! We hope that the transition for our newest Foxes went as smooth as possible and that your students found any necessary support from your school counselor. The School Counseling team has enjoyed getting to know the class of 2026 through our Freshman Guidance sessions and individual meetings.
Through our group sessions, as well as during individual meetings, we covered our Freshman Guidance curriculum including Social/Emotional Learning and the Role of the School Counselor, School Procedures, Graduation Requirements, Extracurricular Activities, and Course Selection for 10th grade. Freshmen should reach out to their counselor at any time if they have questions and/or would like to schedule an appointment. They should have also joined our Class of 2026 Group Guidance Google Classroom. They can email their counselor if they are missing the join code.
WORKING PAPERS
The FLHS Guidance Receptionist, Ms. Barghout, processes working papers. Students can either pick up a paper application in the front of guidance or print out a copy from our website: https://www.bcsdny.org/Page/2319 . Once completed, students should submit the application to Ms. Barghout in the guidance department. Spring is a very busy time for working papers - don’t delay! Please allow up to 2 school days for working papers to be processed - so students shouldn’t wait until the last minute!
STUDENT SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITIES: Students can view the bulletin board by the front door of Guidance with opportunities for jobs and community service events. Additionally, Mrs. Pirro includes various summer opportunities in her daily email to students.

MRS. SUN'S LEAVE REPLACEMENT
Meet Lucy Sun and meet Lucy Guo! For those families who have Mrs. Sun as their guidance counselor we are happy to announce the arrival of baby Lucy Sun! Mom and baby are doing well. We are also happy to announce that we have hired Lucy Guo as Mrs. Sun’s leave replacement for the remainder of this year. Mrs. Guo brings years of experience and is trilingual in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Any of Mrs. Sun’s students should come to Guidance to meet Mrs. Guo who will handle their needs for the remainder of the year. Welcome Lucys!
SCHEDULING FOR 2023-2024
Throughout the months of January and February, students met with their counselor to select courses for the 2023-2024 school year.
COURSE SELECTION TIMELINE AND OVERVIEW OF PROCESS:

Early January - Teachers reviewed their department course options with students.

January - Teachers made recommendations based on student preferences and performance.

January/February - Students met individually with their counselor to review preferences and recommendations, and selected courses for next year.

April - Course selections will be posted on the student and parent portal for final review.

April - If a student is still not approved for a course level they would like to take, students may discuss the course override process with either their teacher and/or counselor. ALL OVERRIDE FORMS ARE DUE BY April 25 at 3PM.

June - Based on final course selections students should make sure they have information about summer reading (all students), and summer assignments (certain AP and Honors level courses).

Late August - 2023-2024 student schedules will be posted on the student and parent portals. Any requests for changes should be made at that time, ideally prior to school starting. The Add/Drop period will close by the end of the second week of school.
TECHNOLOGY
PROBLEMS???Students who need help with their BCSD Chromebook or require other technical support should either access the Student Technology Help Desk in the Library during school hours or they should complete a Help Desk Ticket here .

SENIOR PARENT REMINDERS ED/EA DECISIONS:College decisions are really starting to roll in! If a student was accepted through an ED program (yeah!) they will need to IMMEDIATELY withdraw from any other college that they submitted an application to. Most of the time this can be done through a school’s portal or by sending an email to admissions.
We know there are lots of highs and lows during this time, so students should make an appointment with their counselor as needed to discuss any decisions and future plans.
If a student was deferred from an ED/EA school they should follow up with an email to the college, reiterating their strong interest in attending and they should include any updates – both academically and extracurricularly.
NAVIANCE UPDATES:Many deadlines have now passed, however for any remaining schools (January 1, 15, February 1, or Rolling) students should have completed transcript requests in Naviance at this point. Please also make sure that if it is a Common App college, that the student has also added it to their Common App account. We cannot submit materials unless they are listed on both Naviance and Common App.
Seniors should also update Naviance with all admissions decisions. They should go into Naviance and click on the "edit" pencil to let us know what decision they received. Students need to check their email regularly and often. We know this is challenging given the amount of information that is being sent through email. However, many schools will communicate with students via email. Additionally, students should create their application portal accounts for each college they applied to. Application portals will allow students to check the status of their application, and many schools will release admissions decisions through their portals.
SENIOR GRADES:
First quarter grades were sent in late-November to the colleges that our seniors applied to. Mid-year grades will be sent out automatically (there is no need to formally request) to all colleges in February... Senior grades do matter!
FINANCIAL AID:In case you missed it… below are the steps for applying for Financial Aid that were posted on the last newsletter.

Families are able to complete both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile beginning October 1, 2022. Deadlines for completion vary from college to college but October 1st is the universal start date.

Families will use the “prior-prior” year’s tax returns to complete the FAFSA. This means that financial aid packages and scholarships will be based on 2021 tax returns. Students who are applying Early Decision, Early Action, or Priority will likely have a deadline for submitting financial aid forms by November. It is highly suggested that parents review every college’s financial aid and scholarship website as early as possible to ensure that all deadlines are met.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS:The local scholarship packet will be available on the FLHS Guidance website in early January. The deadline to apply is February 1st. There will be a basket in Guidance to turn them in. No late applications will be accepted, so please apply early to avoid any last minute issues.
JUNIOR PARENT REMINDERS
STANDARDIZED TESTING:
Now that your child’s PSATs scores have been released on Naviance and on your child’s College Board account, we have attached a video which will walk you through understanding PSAT scores: PSAT Video . Alternatively families can review this handout: Understanding your PSAT Scores .
If they do not already have one, students should create a College Board account at www.collegeboard.org using the email address they used on their PSAT answer sheet (NOT their BCSD email). The scores should automatically be filtered into their account this way. Students are also encouraged to make a Khan Academy account at www.khanacademy.org using that same email address. Linking Khan Academy to their College Board account by following these instructions will customize free test prep for students based on their PSAT results (highly recommended!) .
The Guidance Department will forward emails from test prep companies in our community. We have also compiled a list of local test prep companies that you can access on our website . Fox Lane High School does not endorse any particular test prep company. Families should discuss what options will work best for them.

SAT vs. ACT: Students should consult with their counselor to develop an individual standardized test plan, and should then register as soon as possible at either www.collegeboard.org or at www.act.org depending on their plan. Testing Accommodations: If you are approved for testing accommodations through the College Board, remember to enter your SSD number when you register. COLLEGE MEETINGS:Junior college planning meetings will begin in mid-January. We will be sending juniors instructions on how to set up their individual meeting after the holiday break. Families are also encouraged to schedule a meeting (after a student's initial college meeting) with their counselor to walk through the college selection process. This can be in person or virtual, depending on your preference. Please see the Class of 2024 Timeline for all upcoming dates and events.
COLLEGE VISITS/VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES:Families are encouraged to explore colleges and set up college visits/virtual experiences over the course of the next nine months. Please keep in mind:

Students should refer to college websites for details on campus visits, tours, and other information. Regardless if you make it to a campus in-person, it is still important for students to express interest to their prospective schools. GROUP GUIDANCE CORNER
SENIOR GROUP GUIDANCE:
Senior group guidance has officially ended. Seniors should continue to make individual meetings with their counselors as needed.
FRESHMAN GROUP GUIDANCE:Throughout November and December counselors are meeting with their 9th graders in group guidance meetings covering topics related to: adjustment and transition, graduation requirements, study skills and extracurricular activities.
JUNIOR GROUP GUIDANCE:Junior group guidance will begin in January. Counselors will meet with their juniors in weekly group guidance sessions from January through April. Attendance is mandatory. We will cover all components of the college application process. Topics to include:

SOPHOMORE GROUP GUIDANCE:
This spring we will meet with our sophomores in group guidance sessions. Topics for these sessions include: community service, extracurricular activities, creation of a resume, working papers, an introduction to Scoir, post-secondary planning, career exploration, and academic/social/emotional check-ins.
ACCESSING ACADEMIC SUPPORTS
Does your student need help in one of their courses? Or just want to improve?Here are some free academic supports :
After-school Help with Teachers :
All FLHS teachers are available for after-school help at least 2 days a week. Students should ask their teacher if they are unaware of their after-school days. This is highly recommended for any student looking for extra help in a class.
National Honor Society Peer Tutoring :
NHS Tutors are available to help students who are looking for additional academic support in math, science, English and social studies on Mondays and Wednesdays after school from 2:30pm to 3:30pm in the Library. Students interested in being tutored can attend the NHS tutoring sessions on either or both days, no registration required.
FLHS Writing Center:
FLHS teachers are available for help on any written assignment (does not need to be for English class) during lunch periods on several days. Writing Center Schedule
Spanish Club Tutoring:
Need help in your Spanish class? Come to the Spanish Club for help on Mondays from 2:30-3:30 in A109.

Course Selection Days - students will select in each class which courses they might be interested in taking next year

Individual Meetings with Counselors - students will finalize their courses for next year with their counselor based on both teacher recommendations and student’s interests taking into consideration the total program for each student

Course Selection – Each student will have a “Course Information Week” followed by a “Course Recommendation Day” with each of their teachers. Soon after, each student will meet with their counselor individually to select courses for the following school year (Freshman, Sophomores, & Juniors)
