Fox Lane Middle Schooler Makes Masks for the Community
Fox Lane Middle School eighth grader Brady Overland has been giving back in a big way. As part of his bar mitzvah service project, Brady and his mom Jill have been hard at work sewing masks for the community. A graduate of Bedford Village Elementary School, Brady recently donated more than 200 masks to the full-time K-2 students there.
“There is no specific requirement for my bar mitzvah project,” Brady said. “The whole point is to do good and to help others.”
Originally, Brady planned to collect sports equipment for disadvantaged children, but when COVID hit he had to switch gears.
“People needed masks so I thought this would be a great substitute,” he said. So far, he and his mom have made and donated more than 1,000 masks.
“I cut and she sews,” said Brady of the workload. “It takes a half hour to make one mask, but if you cut one day and sew another day, you can make a lot.”
Aside from Bedford Village Elementary, the Overlands have donated masks to the community center in Bedford Katonah, to a Native American tribe in Alaska that was hit hard with COVID and to a group in Portland, Oregon, that put out a request for masks.
The most challenging part of the project so far might surprise you.
“This project taught me that cutting fabric is a lot harder than you think,” Brady said.
Still, Brady has no plans to slow down. He is determined to keep making them as long as there is a need.
“My goal is to help make masks so people can be safe,” Brady said.
