The school district and the Bedford Teachers' Association, in conjunction with the high school English Department, would like to invite you to participate in our Fox Read this summer. You can participate by reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time this summer. There will be opportunities to join community members in discussions led by BCSD faculty on themes, issues, and ideas inspired by the novel.  The discussions will be held at our libraries in the fall of 2019.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is the story of Christopher, a 15-year-old boy whose special needs unfold in a unique world view, and his investigation into the death of his neighbor’s dog.  The story encourages readers to think about autism, family, coping with loss, truth, and, of course, math and science.

Our goal for the community read is to cultivate curiosity and a passion for learning by engaging students, parents and staff in a shared literature experience. Additionally, because the author encourages readers to consider the world through the eyes of a 15-year-old narrator with special needs, we hope it will serve as a talking point to discuss inclusive practices.

Copies will be available at your local library.

*Please be aware. The language in the book is mature; curse words are used by the adult characters. However, this language does not cloud the fact that The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read. Additionally, Scholastic, a trusted school source whose mission is to “encourage the intellectual and personal growth of all children,” calls The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time “one of the freshest debuts in years: a comedy, a heartbreaker, a mystery story, a novel of exceptional literary merit that is great fun to read.”‚Äč
