Food Trucks Bring Joy to Staff at Fox Lane Middle School
“I was sitting at home one day thinking about all of the different events that have been canceled this year and how I looked forward to them,” said Christy McGinn, a sixth-grade learning specialist at Fox Lane Middle School (FLMS). “There's a little spark inside of you when you're excited about something and I wanted to spread a little excitement throughout FLMS.”
To boost morale and spread joy to her coworkers, McGinn came up with the idea of bringing different food trucks on campus to give teachers and staff a little something to look forward to each week. McGinn, a self-described people person who enjoys bringing people together, is also the fundraising chair for the West Patent Elementary School Association. Her goal there is “to partner with local businesses to stimulate the economy.” The food trucks are a perfect extension of that goal.
“This year has been extremely stressful. Each day is a new challenge and sometimes we just need something fun,” she said. “Food truck popups support small businesses and the FLMS staff gets to have a special treat, so it's a win-win.”
So far, since February, teachers and staff have enjoyed lunches from Crafty 'Cue, Bubble & Brew, Road Grub and Wanna Empanada. The inaugural food truck, Crafty 'Cue, is owned by Fox Lane High School graduates Tim Bucolo and Juan Rendon.
“I grew up with both of these wonderful guys who run an absolutely delicious BBQ food truck,” McGinn said. “Many members of our community know this truck from various events they have participated in. I wanted the first truck to be Crafty 'Cue as a nice way to support our FLHS alumni.”
McGinn said staff reaction has been extremely positive. In fact, it has been so positive that her dream of brightening her coworkers’ days has expanded to the entire Fox Lane campus (which includes the high school and district office).
“I have had many co-workers telling me how much they are looking forward to the trucks coming,” she said. “The smiles on their faces, the glimmer in their eyes, the pure joy expressed from something as simple as having a food truck come is why I do it! It isn't as easy as I thought as there is a lot of paperwork, but these trucks have been nothing but cooperative.”
