West Patent’s Nurse Maria Reino Awarded for Excellence in School Nursing
West Patent Elementary School’s Nurse Maria Reino has been awarded the 2021 New York State Association of School Nurses’ (NYSASN) Award for Excellence in School Nursing for the Westchester/Putnam Region.
According to NYSASN, the Association “likes to recognize school nurses in New York State who excel in their practice of school nursing. NYSASN representatives from each Zone are encouraged, not required, to present one school nurse from their Zone each year with the Award for Excellence in School Nursing.”
Reino, who grew up in a fishing village in Spain, has been a beloved member West Patent for 15 years. Aside from keeping the school community safe and healthy, she has been instrumental in some of its service projects like Knitting for Friends and Knitting for Food.
“I see my job as an extension of myself,” Reino said. “When you live in a community you are responsible for keeping it safe in any way you can. My family always helped the community we lived in and I learned from them to help others.”
When she is not taking care of students, Reino continues to find ways to give back — whether it is working closely with Neighbor’s Link or feeding the homeless in New York City on the breakfast runs she has taken part in with her children for more than 15 years.
“Nurse Maria is a compassionate, caring, trustworthy, and highly knowledgeable professional with the highest ethical standards,” said Principal Judy Brewster. “She has placed the safety of our school, students, and staff at the highest priority. She is a powerful advocate for children and families. We are so proud to have Maria working for all the members of our West Patent family.”
