Fox Lane Jazz Band and Chamber Choir Perform in Albany for Music in Our Schools Month

Fox Lane High School Jazz Band and Chamber Choir at Music in Our School Month celebration

The Fox Lane High School Jazz Band and Chamber Choir performed at the Empire State Plaza Concourse in Albany on March 30, 2022 as part of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Music in Our Schools Month celebration.

Every year, NYSSMA sponsors Music In Our Schools Month performances from schools throughout the state. Each ensemble received a plaque commemorating their performance. Assemblymember Chris Burdick was there to greet the music ensembles.

“It was a wonderful performance and I am so pleased that I was in the Capitol to greet the teachers and the amazing young musicians,” Assemblymember Burdick said. “Not only was the performance outstanding, but I was especially impressed with their enthusiasm and energy.”

Dr. Sarah Matthews, who directs the Jazz Band, said the Fox Lane musical groups are frequent performers at the annual month-long event and are honored to represent the district there.

“The students engage with the greater public in a unique way by performing for people who might not otherwise hear the music they work so hard to master,” said Dr. Matthews. “Meeting state representatives who are strong advocates for public school music programs and students as stakeholders is a powerful experience. As a director, I love the experience because it highlights the students in a way that is both educational and fun.”

Chamber Choir Director Edward Reisert added that performances like this one are so important for young musicians.

Any concert that students present in public is an important moment in their lives,” he said. “The students always present themselves — and, by extension, their school — at the highest level. It is so important that we remind the public of the importance of music in our students’ lives during Music In Our Schools Month and throughout the year.”

Congratulations to our musical directors and all of the students who participated!
