BCSD Elementary Bike Run Has a Successful Return
After a two-year hiatus, the beloved Brewster Central School District Bike Run returned on Sunday, May 22, at the Fox Lane campus.
"I am thrilled to have coordinated the BCSD Bike Run this year,” said Dave Mann, who is working alongside co-founder Jen Magee. “Health, wellness and personal growth are all things we do our best to teach our kids, so it only makes sense to do our best to further these values within the community."
This year — the event’s 10th annual — 420 kids from all five Bedford Central School District elementary schools braved the heat and humidity to make their way through the bike and run course and receive a medal from their physical education teachers at the end. In addition, there were approximately 80 parent volunteers.
Students enjoyed a warm-up with Never Stop Moving and got to play on the infield in the Elev8 Play Zone. Bicycle World was also on site to provide last-minute bike repairs.
The Bike Run was created by Christina Dochtermann and Magee and was originally staged in Leonard Park.
"I'm so grateful that Bike Run veterans like Jen Magee, David Griff and Jen Saine have entrusted us with this amazing event they started 12 years ago,” Mann said. “Their mentorship was indispensable as our new crew took over this behemoth of an event for the first time. I can't thank them enough.”
Not only did the Bike Run unite all of the district’s elementary schools in a non-competitive setting, but it raised enough money to donate $2,000 to benefit each of the elementary schools' physical education programs through the purchase of items like gym mats and fitness equipment.
"It was an absolute joy to see the community come together to bring back this event,” Mann said. “One father told me that his daughter learned to face her fear and push to be her best self. That is what it is all about. We hope to bring it back next year, with a few tweaks to make it even better."
